After successfully completing a Canine Kindy or Puppy Preschool course, if you would like to continue building your bond with your dog and impress friends and family with their intelligence and skills Pooch Primary Junior teaches a series of tricks tailored to suit your dog (based on breed, age, natural ability - eg labradors and turn off the lights -v- maltese and turn off the touch lamp).

You can choose 5 tricks for your dog to learn from the following list (plus anything else you might come up with!):  play bow, consecutive rollovers, spin and around, jump through a hoop, wave bye bye, say your prayers, speak, sing, crawl, go to your mat; complex behaviours like fetch your leash, open a door, turn off the light for large dogs (turn off the touch lamp for little dogs), find my keys, tuck yourself into bed, leg weaves, put your toys away, balance on your nose/catch it, frisbee, ring a bell to go outside, oh waiter (fetch me a drink from the fridge), discriminate toys/objects/people by name - great for playing hide and seek.

Some tricks are very useful in everyday situations.  Go to your mat is something your dog can do when visitors come to the door.  Play bows can happen when at the park to try and put other dogs at ease.  And find my keys - speaks for itself!

Pooch Primary Senior - groundwork for agility and formal obedience
When:   by arrangement
Where:  Woodstock Animal Hospital, 392 Woodstock Ave, Rooty Hill
Cost:     $180

Once your dog has finished Canine Kindy you can now bring them along to a Pooch Primary course.  This course is when training gets serious and some basic technical knowledge and skills are taught to dog owners (now referred to as 'handlers').  Handlers will need to keep simple records of their dog's training away from class to ensure an appropriate level of progress is made, and to help determine what if anything is not working or works very well for their dog.

The course builds on Kindy skills and teaches handlers how to transition their dog to a variable reinforcment schedule and intermittent reinforcment schedule.

Dogs and handlers are taught targeting skills including close and at a distance, extended sit, drop on recall, stand (its harder than it sounds!).  Handling skills including how to lead a dog around a course in the most efficient way which also minimises the chance of injury to the dog, sending a dog to an obstacle, and having a dog 'go out' to an obstancle are also taught.

Some low hurdle practice is done in week 5 to ensure handlers learn the optimum time to mark their dogs behaviour during a jump.
